In an ambush by the Ichiwa-kai at a Sumo stable, Tsuyochi Nagano was murdered. To make matters worse, the Nagano's wakizashi sword had been taken by the police as evidence from the crime scene. This wakizashi is of great importance, as it is vital for the ceremony to choose the new leader and is the symbol of leadership in the family. Without it, Shintô Nagano could not be the new leader, and the family began to show signs of discouragement, infighting and fragmentation.
