Boot πŸ’—

Decided to finally figure out the environment lighting system - and what better way to do it than with some metallic boots?

Great job! Are you using cubemaps? Sunlight? Both?

You can get a lot of light from just the skybox/cubemap. (and the reflections!!!)

When I made the Blade Runner eye reflection photo- that was an in game reflection of a cubemap- that's how detailed they can be!

Yeah, I figured I’d finally try to work out what every setting in the lightmap/cube map/skybox mean, as usual by trial and error 🀣

this one uses a cubemap + sunlight.

I don’t like the results of using just the cubemap, since it creates this uniform lighting that affects everything - even physically impossible places like inside of mouths/noses and under the hair - that tends to look unnatural imho. Because of that I usually set the diffuse multiplier lower.
Maybe I am missing some setting here? @state808

On the other hand, the specular intensity is set higher than normal - to get more contrasty reflections in the boots.Β

Well yours looks fantastic!

In terms of the cubemaps- I know what you mean. That's one of the things I consider a "pet peeve" (seeing those areas lit up that should be dark). This even happens in a lot of CGI in films and it always draws me out of the story, as a result (and it looks very fake). I try to counteract things like that by boosting the "natural" light or spotlights, like you're saying. I also think of something @Kraegar once shared....Many of the hook settings can be pushed much farther than you think! Sometimes the extremes produce really great results, too! So sometimes I will use extremely high values or negative values.

You made such a great tutorial with lighting- I am hoping you'll do one on the things you are discovering here πŸ™‚ We will all benefit from your discoveries!
